Alan Furneaux Fine Artwork

Painting is my greatest passion. I have been an artist most of my adult life and take enormous pride in seeing my work being displayed in various homes and galleries across England and the world.

About me

Painting the world as I see it

Creativity has always run in my family. My grandfather George Hann, was an acclaimed artist and mentor to me. I started very young in oil painting cutting up old bedsheets and turning them into canvases.. Being an army child I was good at art, music and sport and was particularly good at running especially long distances. I worked in many different jobs until I set up my decorating firm in Brighton which is where I bought my first house and lived with my eldest daughter.

I was always working in art and music and had a canvas on the go and would go gigging in pubs on my own. When I finally had the chance to quit my day job there was a choice between music or art. I chose art. With the blessing of my hard-working wife, I had to make it work as we had a mortgage to pay and children to feed. It's been a roller coaster of success and failure and back again. I now live and have a home studio in Penzance Cornwall.

Oils

Oil painting is a slow process because you have to wait and be patient when adding layers it is however worth the wait as the finished results are worth it.

Gouache

Gouache is bright and strong and is great for working out doors for fresh immediate results and is easy to transport and work with and that's why I just I love it

Acrylic

I like to take acrylic painting out with me when I am plain air painting but only occasionally as I now paint mainly in oil. I love acrylic and I also love oil

PARTNERSHIPS

Galleries with my work

Physical galleries used to be the only way to get your work out there but now everything is online and people can find me via Instagram Facebook or Etsy for posters. or even on the auction results websites, I have to say though I still love galleries. They are run by real people in real towns and you can see the work live and talk to the owners and staff and get a sense of what your eyes are telling you. You can't beat it. Near where I live I have been working very closely with The Thomas Henry Gallery in Newlyn which has been a highlight for me as most of my work is local and Newlyn is a favourite. There is also the Market House Gallery In Marazion which is full of the best art in West Cornwall.

Painting is a funny business. I go into the studio with a great ideas and every time it is rendered useless because that's not how it works. It works when you have a brush in your hand and you mould and create and destroy and rebuild as you go along,

Starting a painting

When I look back I am amazed that I have painted so many pieces. My style has changed considerably over the years. The early works were bright and bold using acrylic, mainly on paper and the later work became more muted using oils, usually on canvas or board, with the occasional burst of colour and life to break it all up. All laced with optimism and humour,
